Talon Barbet has been a passenger in his life since the death of his sister and his mother left him with an absentee father. But he is determined that his first year at Vikberg College, an ultra-elite university for vampires, will make up for years of loneliness and obscurity. Unfortunately, it means he must forget about Lennox; a human he's secretly loved and his best friend.

Not ready to let go, Talon sneaks Lennox into Vikberg by having her assume the identity of his dead sister with the help of his childhood friend, Staver, who is reluctant to serve as Talon's accomplice. Talon hopes the trio can create new lives at Vikberg. Only Staver begins acting strange and ignores him while Lennox integrates better than Talon, who chokes during a club initiation and scrambles to get a foothold on society and class politics.

As the friends drift apart, Lennox’s true identity comes into question when someone breaks into her room with a threatening message. Talon becomes increasingly paranoid that someone at Vikberg knows Lennox is a human and suspects Staver is a tantrum away from ratting her out.

Suddenly, the same solitude he felt outside Vikberg returns, and Talon, pushed to his limits, recklessly embraces deception and is forced to take extreme measures to rebuild his relationships and status. But everything he's worked to build can come crashing down, especially if the vampires discover Talon is responsible for smuggling Lennox - a bloodshark - into Vikberg.
